Signs That Your Engine Needs Tuning
- Check Engine Light
- Excessive Noise or Vibration
- Rough Idle
- Constant Overheating
- Decrease In Fuel Efficiency
- Loss of Power
- Check Engine Light
While this seems obvious, some owners are tempted to allow this little light to stay on indefinitely. That's never a good idea. When the check engine light turns on, it signals the possibility of any number of issues, from minor to serious. If the light blinks constantly, you need to be proactive. Please do not ignore this signal light.
Excessive Noise or Vibration
Unusual noises accompanied by vibrations can signal an underlying issue with the vehicle's operations. Critical sounds need to be addressed immediately. Grinding, clicking, or whirring can be an indicator of engine failure or other significant issues. Strange noises from the tailpipe, turbocharger, or exhaust manifold could mean an exhaust/intake leak. This can cause you to fail emission testing. Strange noises need to be identified and remedied
Rough Idle
A rough idle - tremoring, sputtering, or fluctuating RPMs while stopped - can signal an underlying issue with your engine. A rough idle can also be a symptom of worn spark plugs, vacuum leaks, or fuel system failure. When you're sitting at a streetlight and your car rumbles or shakes, it's definitely time for some maintenance.
Constant Overheating
Abnormal overheating during idling or random overheating could represent many different causes. Possible causes could be intermittent fan failure, thermostat sticking, or coolant loss. All these conditions will only get worse over time and may lead to significant engine damage. Constant overheating, however, can be a more significant problem, such as a head gasket failure, which requires immediate attention.
Decrease In Fuel Efficiency
Older cars aren't as fuel-efficient as they are when new. So this isn't usually a cause for concern unless you experience a sudden drop in fuel efficiency. That can be the result of poor maintenance or more serious problems. Fuel injectors are responsible for inputting fuel into your engine's cylinders and need to be checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Our technicians will check your fuel injectors regularly and perform factory-required maintenance.
Loss of Power
It can feel unnerving when your engine loses power. If the check engine light immediately comes on after a loss of power, it could be from restricted airflow, fuel delivery problems, or faulty sensors. At Gary's, we routinely check the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and other sensors to ensure they are performing to manufacturer specifications. Some other reasons for a loss of power include worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils indicating some maintenance will need to be performed.
