Signs That Your Car’s AC Needs Attention

Many different issues can cause your car’s air conditioning to fail but some are more common than others, especially in the Valley.

  • There’s weak airflow or no airflow, even at the highest setting possible.
  • There’s a disagreeable mildew odor inside your car or coming from the AC vents
  • Your vehicle’s AC doesn’t work if the car isn’t moving.
  • Water condensation inside the car.

Most car air conditioning systems use a gas refrigerant. If everything is working properly in your vehicle, the AC system turns it into a liquid to keep the cabin cool.  After 1993, the standard systems used was the R134A which is now transitioning over to 1234YF. We service both systems. To check the pressure in your vehicle, mechanics have to use a special machine, dependent on your vehicle’s system, to measure the gas. A qualified technician determines how much refrigerant is needed by comparing your car’s measurements with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Common Repairs For Your Car’s Air Conditioning

Refrigerant Leak

A freon recharge is usually the first type of check we perform to be sure that your car doesn’t have any leaks. First, we recharge the refrigerant and add a dye into the system, then use a black light to find where the dye is escaping. This is a frugal, efficient solution that can immediately be fixed to restore your vehicle’s cool air.  However, leaks can also be due to a damaged hose or seal and those typically require more extensive repairs. A freon recharge is a long-term solution. Your car’s AC system is a closed or sealed system. It won’t allow freon to escape. After getting a recharge you probably won’t need another one.

Faulty AC Compressor

The AC compressor has a pivotal function. It lowers the temperature in your car by pressurizing the refrigerant to cool the air, then regulates the temperature output, while also detecting temperature changes, and channels air to the AC condenser. One of the easiest ways to prevent this failure is by keeping your oil levels consistent through regular maintenance. If your refrigerant is low or you have a clogged filter that can also cause the compressor to malfunction.

Damaged AC Condenser or AC Condenser Fan

Near the radiator, the AC condenser cools the refrigerant after compression. This vital component helps to maintain a comfortable vehicle temperature by converting the refrigerant into a liquid that moves to the evaporative core. If it’s damaged, corroded, or otherwise impaired your car’s AC is not going to function properly, and driving anywhere after your car is parked outside will be unendurable. At Gary’s Automotive we perform tests to determine if the issue is a faulty fan, fuse, relay, switch, or wiring.

Electronics Malfunctioning

Modern cars have complex levels of electronics that control various systems including the air conditioning system. Your vehicle is a work of engineering art and we respect that. From the sensors under the hood to the climate control interface inside your car, truck, or fleet vehicle every aspect of the electronics is important.

Electrical failures can often become an obstacle for inexperienced mechanics. Thankfully, we’ve worked on thousands of cars across all sorts of makes and models. We use diagnostic tools to get at the heart of the issue so we can get you back out on the road without stress.
